The Plaza de Colón is situated next to the Serrano, Goya and Jorge Juan streets. This square and its fountain commemorate the explorer Christopher Columbus, whose name in Spanish was Cristóbal Colón. On the paseo de la Castellana side there is a monument to Columbus built in 1885, who is standing at the pinnacle of a tall column. The gardens in the square are known as the Jardines del Descubrimiento, where the Royal Mint was located until 1970.
